I could read people, land the joke, keep a conversation moving. I never really thought about any of it. That was just who I was.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen I had the aneurysm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter that came the aphasia, the fistula, brain surgery, a seizure, and months of trying to get my speech back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd through all of it, there was one question that bothered me more than anything else:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWould I ever be myself again?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat was probably the hardest part of everything for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause this didn't just affect me when I was in the hospital or when I was doing rehab. It followed me everywhere.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt affected conversations with my family, friends, and people I'd known my whole life. It affected going out and meeting new people. It made me sad knowing they were meeting this version of me without ever knowing who I was before. They could only judge me by who I was standing in front of them that day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePhysically, I came back further than I ever expected. Mentally, I did too. I'm not the guy lying in the hospital bed anymore. I got a lot of my life back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut I didn't get all of that back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what makes it hard.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePeople might look at me now and think I'm fine. And in a lot of ways, I am.
